Case Study

The High Growth Team

Creating a tight knit, skilled team of leaders can require more than training. Most leaders are pulled in many directions at once. They know in theory the leadership best practices they should follow, but implementation, given their day to day workload, can be challenging.  Below we share the experience of a team who came to Diamond Insight for help as it developed cohorts of leaders and improved performance.

The High Growth Team: Building Leadership Skills and Collaboration
across Divisions

This team was uniquely positioned to capture market share in a growing industry—if it could sustain an aggressive pace, and get its mid-level leaders to collaborate together when they were used to, even rewarded for, competing with other Divisions across the team. They were hiring at a rapid pace and faced the challenge of assimilating these new hires effectively. While the firm was planning how to address these challenges at a corporate level, its solutions were a long way off. Something needed to be done now to enable those mid-level leaders to face their challenges today—before the market opportunity passed.

A Vice President of the team turned to Diamond Insight for a practical, hands-on program to strengthen the peer network of these leaders, accelerate their development and demonstrate management’s commitment and support. She wanted to turn their frustration with the team’s challenges into constructive action. Diamond Insight proposed group coaching: highly interactive, four-hour sessions with three cohorts of 10 mid-level managers from across the team. These managers selected topics to focus on, including engaging senior audiences, coaching across generations, managing conflict, and collaborating in a competitive environment.

Participants report that the sessions not only improved their peer network and leadership skills, but also improved teamwork in unexpected ways, providing opportunities to develop business across the team; strengthening their performance assessment process; and helping them secure resources for team-wide projects.

The program has proven so successful that the participants requested that the program continue, and the sponsoring VP invited her peers to join forces and expand it across the team. To date, Diamond Insight has conducted almost 20 sessions with close to 200 participants over two years.
