The Merged Team

Managing team dynamics and performance can be tricky, and when you add different personalities or major change to the mix, the job only gets more challenging. Below we share the experience of a team who came to Diamond Insight for help as it navigated new terrain and sought to improve performance.

The Merged Team: Managing Transition and Growth
A recent company acquisition had thrown this team for a loop. Now merged with the functionally similar team from the acquired company, the team was coming face to face with the realities of just how different the structures and cultures of the two companies really were. The team had grown significantly as a result of the merger and roles and responsibilities were now in flux. And adding to the complexity, team members were scattered at five different locations throughout the world.

The team’s Vice President recognized a crisis waiting to happen, and asked Diamond Insight to support her team during this difficult transition. Virginia conducted one-on-one interviews with team members to gather individual perspectives on roles, concerns, and their ideal vision for the team. She was then able to distill the data into six core themes and shared these with the Vice President prior to facilitating an all-day off-site with her entire team. At the off-site, Virginia helped the team share their perceptions openly, honestly and constructively. Together, they came up with a plan for their team that focused on reorganizing, streamlining decision-making, and enhancing roles and responsibilities.

At the team’s request, Virginia continued for several years to facilitate an annual off-site meeting with the team for performance “tune ups.” Between its day-to-day efforts and annual pulse check, the team has not just successfully integrated but really became a high performing team, evolving their services as their company continued to grow.
